Hinge prompts for guys: answers that get replies
Updated 29 October 2026
A lot of men's Hinge profiles say the same things: the gym, travel, a cold pint, work hard play hard, someone who doesn't take themselves too seriously. None of it is wrong. It's just interchangeable, so it doesn't give anyone a reason to pick you or a way to start talking.
This guide is about swapping the generic for the specific. The examples are written to show the shape of a good answer. Use your own details. If you want a quick verdict on one you've written, the free prompt checker will give you one.
What tends to go wrong
- Lists instead of moments. "Gym, football, pints with the lads" is a list. "Sunday five-a-side, then a roast I've earned and a nap I haven't" is a moment.
- Claims instead of proof. Saying you're funny, easy-going or ambitious does nothing. Showing it does.
- Being negative. "No time-wasters" and "don't bother if..." put everyone off, including the people you'd get on with.
- Being cagey. One-word answers or deliberately vague ones read as not trying.
- Trying too hard to be edgy. A joke that would land with your mates can read as rude to a stranger.
Prompts that suit most men well
There's no prompt you have to use, but these make it easy to be specific and give an easy way in. There's a longer breakdown of every option in our main Hinge prompts guide.
Typical Sunday
Before
Gym, brunch, chill.
After
Parkrun if I've been good that week, a bacon roll if I haven't, then the afternoon losing at chess to my dad.
Real routine, a bit of self-awareness, and chess is an easy question.
Together, we could
Before
Travel the world and explore new places.
After
Find out whether the curry mile is actually a mile. I'll bring a pedometer, you bring an appetite.
Specific, a bit silly, and it's a date idea already.
I geek out on
Before
Football and tech.
After
Old Ordnance Survey maps. I can tell you where every lost railway line in Kent used to run, whether you want to know or not.
Niche enthusiasm is more attractive than broad interests.
First round is on me if
Before
You're not boring.
After
You can beat my time on the Times crossword. Current record is embarrassingly long.
A challenge with a self-own instead of a condition.
What I order for the table
Before
Everything, I'm a foodie.
After
Extra garlic bread, and I'll pretend it's for everyone.
Short, warm, and a small joke about yourself.
The one thing I'd love to know about you is
Before
Everything.
After
Your most controversial food opinion. Mine is that a Greggs steak bake beats most restaurant pies.
Answers its own question, so replying is easy.
Lines worth dropping
These come up again and again on men's profiles. Each one can be swapped for something that actually says something about you.
- "Work hard, play hard". Swap it for what work and play actually look like for you.
- "Looking for someone who doesn't take themselves too seriously". Show you don't, instead.
- "6ft because apparently that matters". It reads as bitter. Put your height in the height field and move on.
- "Here for a good time, not a long time". If that's true, say it plainly. If it's a joke, it doesn't read as one.
- "Partner in crime". Name the crime. A Saturday of car boot sales is a better offer.
- Anything rating women, setting rules, or mentioning your ex.

Plenty of men's profiles lean on jokes and bravado and forget to be warm. A single prompt that shows you care about something (your mates, your family, your dog, the allotment you're failing at) makes the rest of your profile land better.
I won't shut up about
My nan's Sunday trifle. She won't give anyone the recipe. I'm working on it.
Warm, specific, and a bit of a story.
A life goal of mine
To grow one tomato on my balcony that's better than the ones from the shop. Year three. Still losing.
Self-deprecating without being down on yourself.
If you're not the funny one
You don't need to be a comedian. Plenty of the best answers are just honest and specific. If jokes feel forced, lean on things you know a lot about, things you're working on, or a plan you'd like to make with someone. A calm, clear answer reads as confident, and confident is attractive.
This year, I really want to
Before
Be the best version of myself.
After
Finish the Three Peaks without my knees giving up, and learn to cook one curry properly from scratch.
Sincere and specific. Either goal is an easy question.
Match your prompts to your photos
If your photos are all gym mirror selfies, no prompt will save them. Your prompts work best when they echo something in a photo: a hobby, a place, a dog. That gives people two different things to comment on that tell the same story. Our Hinge photo tips cover which photos to use and in what order.
If you're also on Bumble, the same principles apply to your bio. See Bumble bio ideas.
Before you hit save
- Does every answer have a real detail in it?
- Is there at least one that's warm, not just funny?
- Could a stranger reply to each one in a few words?
- Is there anything negative, a demand, or a joke at someone else's expense?
- Would your best mate say it sounds like you?
Questions people ask
What are good Hinge prompts for guys?
Prompts that let you be specific and give an easy reply: "Typical Sunday", "Together, we could", "I geek out on", "First round is on me if" and "What I order for the table" all work well. The answer matters more than the prompt.
Should guys use funny Hinge prompts?
Humour helps if it's natural and not at anyone else's expense. Mix it with at least one warm or sincere answer so your profile doesn't feel like a stand-up set.
Is it bad to mention the gym on Hinge?
No, if it's specific and part of a wider picture. "Gym" on its own says very little. A line about the five-a-side team you captain or the half marathon you're training for says much more.
How do I make my Hinge profile stand out as a guy?
Swap general claims for specific details, lead with a clear photo of your face, and make sure each prompt gives people something easy to reply to. Most profiles don't, so it's an easy way to stand out.
